1.5 days of lecture and wet lab on veterinary dentistry, presented by Jill Medenwaldt CVT, VTS (Dentistry).  For technicians.

At the end of the two day course, you will be able to:

  • Identify normal oral anatomy and recognize abnormal anatomy
  • Perform a complete oral exam, in the awake and anesthetized patient
  • Chart dental procedures utilizing the triadan numbering system, dental terminology and directional terminology per American Veterinary Dental College (AVDC) guidelines
  • Efficiently obtain full mouth dental radiographs for the canine and feline patient
  • Identify normal oral radiographic structures
  • Use proper ergonomic positions and equipment when performing dental procedures
  • Identify various dental instruments and their purposes
  • Demonstrate the proper care of the dental unit and instruments, including sharpening
  • Understand components of anesthetic equipment and care of patient anesthetized for dental procedure
  • Discuss various dental marketing techniques

 

About the instructor:

Jill Medenwaldt CVT, VTS (Dentistry) is a 2003 graduate of the Veterinary Technician Program at Madison Area Technical College in Wisconsin. She began her career in a general practice setting. In 2008, she joined the University of Wisconsin Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH) to work in the Dentistry and Oral Surgery Department, where she found her passion for teaching. In 2010, she earned her certification as a Veterinary Technician Specialist in Dentistry (VTS-D). Jill is an active board member of the Wisconsin Veterinary Technician Association, an organization that promotes and provides continuing education to technicians in Wisconsin. In her spare time she is an avid Wisconsin Badger volleyball and basketball fan and enjoys hiking and running with her dog Morley.

 

All equipment for the laboratory will be provided.  Participants may wish to bring a scrubtop.

Registration fee includes: Breakfast, lunch and refreshments on Tuesday, seminar, seminar notes, and continuing education credits.

  • Steps to the Comprehensive Oral and Radiographic Evaluation
    • Machine maintenance, set up and shut down
    • Supragingival and subgingival scaling and polishing
    • Identification and use of curettes and scalers
    • Ergonomics

9 am – 9:45 am

  • Lab for Proper technique for supragingival and subgingival scaling
    • One machine per person.  One canine specimen per person and one feline specimen per two people.
    • Correct technique for supra- and subgingival scaling
    • Correct technique for hand instruments

10 am – 11:15 am

  • Anatomy (oral anatomy, terminology, directions, triadan system)
    • Updates on AVDC nomenclature
    • Recognition of common oral pathology

11:15 am – 12 pm

  • Review of Periodontal Disease

12 pm – 1 pm

  • Lunch

1 pm – 1:45 pm

  • Lab for Feline and Canine Oral Examination
    • One canine and one feline specimen per two people.
    • Complete intra- and extraoral exam
    • Charting pathology in the oral cavity in both the dog and cat

1:45 pm – 2:30 pm

  • Instrumentation and Sharpening Lecture/Lab
    • Identification of instruments and their uses
    • Learn to sharpen instruments

2:45 pm – 3:45 pm

  • Concepts in Dental Radiology
    • Recognition of a diagnostic radiograph
    • Normal Anatomy
    • Troubleshooting non-diagnostic films

3:45 pm – 5 pm

  • Wow Your Client – It’s Not Just a “Dental”
    • Educating clients on home care

Day 2 (morning session, 8 am – 12 pm)

  • Dental Radiography Lab
    • Laboratory to learn proper positioning to obtain full mouth dental radiographs in the canine and feline patient
